Salty Service Chapter 1

Behind a battered mahogany desk that had survived three decades of stray coffee spills, dog biscuits, and heavy paws, Sergeant Salty sat locked in mortal combat with his ultimate nemesis: municipal paperwork.

Form 88-C—Request for Emergency Treat Requisition—stared back at him with cold, heartless bureaucracy.

Salty tapped his heavy wooden pencil against his jaw, his dark nose twitching as a stray sunbeam cut through the dusty Venetian blinds. Life as the top hound on the squad had its perks, but the desk work was a slow, grinding torture. He flexed his broad shoulders, adjusting the collar of his rumpled beige trench coat, and let out a long, heavy sigh that fluttered the stray receipts scattered across his blotter.

Then, the frosted glass door swung open.
It didn't just open; it glided open with the  precision of a Hollywood grand entrance. Framing the doorway were two absolute visions—a pair of magnificent blonde bombshells so stunning they could make a red light turn green out of sheer embarrassment.

The first was tall, sharp, and effortlessly sleek, with golden hair cascading over her shoulders in soft, movie-star waves. She wore a tailored crimson trench dress that hugged every curve with breathtaking accuracy, her dark blue eyes gleaming with intelligence and a touch of dangerous mischief.

The second was equally captivating, boasting a sun-kissed glow, a razor-sharp smile, and shimmering, platinum locks that caught the afternoon sunlight like spun silk. They moved together with a synchronized, feline grace that made the cramped, yellowed office instantly feel like a high-fashion runway in Milan.

Salty froze, his pencil hovering an inch above Form 88-C.

The taller blonde stepped forward, her red high heels clicking softly against the worn hardwood floor with a slow rhythm that sounded suspiciously like a heartbeat.

A faint, head-spinning breeze of expensive jasmine, sweet honeysuckle, and wild vanilla washed over the desk, instantly obliterating the lingering aroma of Salty’s morning maple donut.

She leaned down over the cluttered mahogany, resting two perfectly manicured hands on the edge of his desk. Her gaze locked onto Salty’s eyes with an intensity that sent a sudden, electric sizzle straight down his spine. The second bombshell leaned casually against the doorframe, crossing her long legs and flashing a smile that could melt polar ice caps.

"Salty," the first one purred, her voice a low, velvety melody that vibrated through the quiet room. "We have a special mission for you."

In the brain of Sergeant Salty, time seemed to dilate.
The words special mission filtered through his tired afternoon mind and immediately hit his internal translation matrix. Special mission... spec-ial mish-on... special sandwich.

Oh, sweet mother of sourdough, Salty thought to himself, his stomach performing a sudden, dramatic somersault of pure, unadulterated joy. A special sandwich. Thick-cut honey-glazed ham, double-smoked turkey, crisp iceberg lettuce, melted aged Swiss cheese, and a generous, unapologetic lather of whole-grain mustard on toasted brioche. Maybe even a dill pickle spear on the side. Yes... oh, sweet mercy, yes. I would love a sandwich.

A soft spark of genuine affection danced in his eyes as he looked at her. Her golden hair was practically glowing under the flickering overhead light, and as she leaned just an inch closer, Salty felt a pulse of undeniable heat crackle through the air between them. She was gorgeous, no doubt about it—the kind of woman who could ask a guy to jump off a cliff, and he'd only pause to ask if she wanted him to do a backflip on the way down. But beneath the glamour, there was a playful warmth in her eyes that made his broad chest swell.
He didn't break eye contact. He couldn't. With the slow, practiced cool of a veteran detective who knew he held all the cards—even if half those cards were mentally covered in mayo—he slowly set his pencil down on the desk blotter.

He leaned back in his squeaky leather chair, resting his large hands over his belt buckle. He gave his jaw a smooth, brooding tilt, fighting back the small, traitorous wag of his tail that was threatening to knock over his metal trash can beneath the desk.

"Go on," he said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly baritone that oozed effortless charisma.

The blonde chuckled, a soft, musical sound that made Salty’s heart do a double-take. She reached out, her cool fingertips brushing ever so gently against the leather lapel of his coat, lingering just long enough to make his ears perk up.

"We knew you wouldn't turn us down," she murmured, her dark blue eyes sparkling with a potent mix of flirtation and urgency. "Nobody else in this city has the muscle, the instincts... or the undeniable charm to pull this off."

"You flatter me, sweetheart," Salty replied, offering a dangerously smooth smirk that he had spent years perfecting in his rearview mirror. "Though I have to admit, you've got my full, undivided attention. What's the job?"

The second blonde stepped into the room, her hips swaying subtly as she joined her partner beside the desk. She placed a slender hand on Salty's shoulder, her touch sending a pleasant shiver straight through his coat.

"The Syndicate took something that belongs to us, Salty," she whispered, leaning down so her soft platinum curls brushed against his ear, leaving him momentarily dizzy. "Something priceless. And we heard Sergeant Salty is the only dog big enough, smart enough, and handsome enough to get it back."
Salty took a slow, deep breath, soaking in the perfume, the subtle romance, and the sheer high-stakes drama filling his modest office. The municipal paperwork on his desk suddenly felt a million miles away.
"Priceless, huh?" Salty purred, looking between the two magnificent women with a slow, appreciative grin. "Well, ladies, you came to the right hound. But a special job like this... it doesn't come cheap.

The first bombshell leaned in even closer, her lips hovering just inches from his nose, her smile practically radiating warmth. "Name your price, Sergeant. Anything you want."

Salty’s eyes flickered, his brain briefly flashing back to the warm, toasted brioche sandwich of his dreams before returning to the captivating pair standing before him.

"First," Salty grunted playfully, "we start with lunch. Extra bacon. And then... we save the world."

The ladies laughed, a rich, gorgeous chorus that lit up the dimly lit office, and Salty knew right then and there—paperwork could wait. Sergeant Salty was officially on the case.
