📰 BIG SALTY DOG NEWS

The Top 10 Funniest News Stories Today

Thursday, 13 August 2026

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, dogs, cats and people who have somehow managed to lose their glasses while wearing them.

Welcome to another edition of Big Salty Dog News, where we take a perfectly respectable look at the day's happenings and then immediately ask the question: “Can we make this considerably more ridiculous?”

Our handsome Mr. Salty is behind the desk tonight, accompanied by his glamorous blonde co-host, who has apparently been hired because she understands international affairs, breaking news and, most importantly, how to stop Mr. Salty from laughing during serious reports.

So, without further barking...

🐶 TOP 10 FUNNY NEWS STORIES TODAY

10. Scientists Discover That Even Worms Can Have Architectural Ambitions

Scientists have been looking into the strange spiral towers created by lugworms on tidal flats. The tiny creatures produce remarkable structures that have puzzled scientists for years.

The explanation involves ropes, cables and physics.

Yes, physics.

Meanwhile, Big Salty Dog News has conducted its own investigation and believes the worms are simply building tiny seaside apartments and have become fed up with Dublin property prices.

Mr. Salty's co-host asked whether the worms were paying rent.

We are still awaiting confirmation.

9. The Flip-Flop Has Apparently Become Fashionable Again

Good news for anyone who spent the last 20 years believing that fashion had abandoned them.

Flip-flops are back.

And apparently they're getting a makeover, with kitten-heel versions entering the fashion world.

This is fantastic news for people who want the comfort of beach footwear while simultaneously being slightly taller.

Big Salty Dog News predicts the next development will be stiletto wellies.

We apologise in advance if somebody actually invents them.

8. The Great Solar Eclipse Has Left Millions Looking Up

Yesterday's total solar eclipse provided spectacular scenes across parts of Europe, with huge crowds gathering to witness the Moon temporarily block out the Sun.

Naturally, humans responded in the traditional manner:

Everyone took photographs of it.

Then everyone looked at the photographs on their phones.

So, technically, many people travelled hundreds of kilometres to stare at their phones.

Mr. Salty's co-host asked whether anyone had simply enjoyed the eclipse without taking a photograph.

The newsroom went silent.

Nobody knew anyone like that.

7. The Perseid Meteor Shower Is Also Putting on a Show

Just when you thought the sky had finished showing off, the Perseid meteor shower has been providing another spectacular celestial display.

For astronomers, it's a wonderful natural phenomenon.

For Big Salty Dog readers, it's another excellent excuse to lie outside at an unreasonable hour while telling everybody:

“I know exactly what I'm looking at.”

You don't.

Neither do we.

But that doesn't matter.

Just point upwards confidently.

6. Somewhere, Right Now, Someone Is Probably Still Talking About the Eclipse

The internet has been enjoying a magnificent combination of eclipse photographs, meteor discussions, planetary observations and increasingly enthusiastic theories about what it all means.

Some people looked at the sky and saw astronomy.

Others looked at the sky and apparently saw the beginning of the next Hollywood disaster movie.

Big Salty Dog News would like to reassure everybody that the planets have not formed a committee to discuss humanity.

At least, not that we know of.

5. A Fisherman Discovers That Octopuses Have Excellent Grip

And now to the day's most spectacular animal-related incident.

A fisherman in the Philippines found himself wrestling with an octopus which had attached several tentacles to his face.

Yes.

His face.

This is the sort of story where you don't need a journalist.

You need a camera operator, a witness and somebody standing nearby shouting:

“ARE YOU ALL RIGHT?”

The octopus apparently wasn't interested in giving an interview.

Mr. Salty's co-host suggested the fisherman might have accidentally wandered into the octopus's personal space.

Our legal department has advised us not to comment further.

4. The Cat Has Once Again Taken Over the Internet

We have no idea what cats have done today.

And that's precisely the point.

Somewhere in the world, a cat has probably climbed into something it shouldn't, knocked something over, stared at a wall for 17 minutes and then walked away as though it had just completed an important government assignment.

Dogs, meanwhile, continue to believe that humans are wonderful creatures who should be rewarded for returning home after five minutes.

Cats believe humans should be grateful for being allowed to live in the same building.

Big Salty Dog News remains firmly on Team Dog.

3. Scientists Continue To Discover That Animals Are Basically Running Everything

From lugworms constructing mysterious towers to octopuses attempting facial attachments, nature has once again demonstrated that animals are considerably more interesting than most of us.

Humans invented social media.

Animals simply became the content.

Dogs have mastered the sad eyes.

Cats have mastered emotional manipulation.

Octopuses have mastered eight arms.

And apparently worms have mastered construction.

Mr. Salty has therefore announced that Big Salty Dog News will henceforth employ a qualified dog as its science correspondent.

Unfortunately, the dog demanded payment in sausages.

Negotiations continue.

2. The Newsroom Investigates the Most Important Question of the Day

Why does everything taste better when somebody else cooks it?

Our investigation began at lunchtime.

It ended approximately seven minutes later when the newsroom ordered takeaway.

The scientific explanation remains unclear.

Our blonde co-host believes it is because somebody else does the washing-up.

Mr. Salty believes it is because food tastes better when you haven't spent 45 minutes standing in front of the fridge asking yourself what you actually want.

The newsroom has reached a unanimous conclusion:

She's probably right.

🥇 AND FINALLY... THE BIG SALTY DOG STORY OF THE DAY

10. Big Salty Dog News Launches a Serious Investigation Into Mondays

Our exclusive investigation has uncovered shocking evidence that Monday is considerably less enjoyable when you are tired.

Scientists are apparently considering a major study.

Workers are demanding answers.

Dogs remain completely unconcerned.

In fact, the average dog appears to have developed the perfect work-life balance:

Eat.

Sleep.

Walk.

Investigate suspicious smells.

Sleep again.

Repeat.

Frankly, Big Salty Dog News believes humans should learn from them.

Mr. Salty's co-host has suggested introducing a compulsory afternoon nap for all adults.

Mr. Salty immediately declared this to be the most important policy proposal of 2026.

Parliament has been notified.

The dogs are already in favour.

🐾 THAT'S ALL FROM BIG SALTY DOG NEWS!

And there we have it: another day in which the world has demonstrated that reality doesn't always need a comedy writer.

From eclipses and meteors to fashionable flip-flops, mysterious worms and octopuses with an apparent interest in human faces, today's news has had something for everyone.

And remember, Big Salty Dog News doesn't necessarily make the news funnier.

Sometimes...

the news does that all by itself.

Mr. Salty is signing off.

His glamorous co-host is signing off.

The newsroom dog is refusing to sign off because someone has opened a packet of biscuits.

And somewhere tonight, a cat is staring directly into a camera while silently judging every single one of us.

Goodnight, stay salty, keep laughing — and we'll see you tomorrow for another edition of Big Salty Dog News! 🐶😂📺
