Chapter 5 – The Narrow Escape

Wind roared like an angry god across the AVE’s rooftop. Sarah ducked as Candle of Spices swung a steel spice grinder at her head — the size of a medieval mace and twice as deadly. She rolled sideways, boot scraping the curved surface, and spotted her chance.

Ahead, between two carriages, there was a narrow maintenance gap — barely wide enough for her to squeeze through. If she could make it, she’d drop down into the dining car and outflank Candle.

Salty’s head appeared from the hatch behind her. “Sarah! Move!” he shouted over the gale.
She smirked. “You’ll just slow me down, Sergeant!”

She darted forward, Candle lunging after her. At the last second, she turned sideways, sucked in a breath, and slipped into the narrow gap like a cat through a fence. The metal scraped her jacket, the train’s coupling rattled beneath her feet, and for a terrifying heartbeat, the ground blurred just inches below.

Then — thump! — she dropped through the service door into the next carriage. She landed in the dining car, startling a waiter who had been balancing a plate of jamón ibérico and Rioja.

Back on the roof, Candle spun toward Salty. “Looks like it’s just you and me now.”
“Bad news for you, mate,” Salty replied, stepping forward, trench coat whipping in the wind.

But before they could clash, every carriage light flickered. The intercom hissed to life.

“Attention passengers… we have reached cruising speed. Which means I can finally have some fun.”

The dining car’s automatic doors slid open — and there he was.
Ron Beefmaster.
Immaculate black suit. Red silk tie. A grin that said I own this train. In his hands: a sleek, custom pistol, polished to a mirror shine.

Sarah froze mid-step, heart pounding.
Salty, still on the roof, saw the shadow of Ron through the skylight and felt his stomach knot.

“Welcome to my express service,” Ron said, leveling the gun at Sarah. “Next stop — nowhere.”
