Salty budget 2027
"Alright, you unwashed collection of tax liabilities, listen up," Salty growled, pulling out his brass spectacles. "The Minister has handed down Budget 2027—an €8.5 billion package backed by a €9.5 billion state surplus. We’re going to break down every single euro so I know who can actually afford to clear their bar tab tonight."
Dannyboy nearly knocked over his cider, his knuckles white against the glass. "Tell me straight, Sarge! Am I still going to be living off instant noodles?"
"Not quite, kid," Salty grunted. "The National Minimum Wage is going up by 79 cents to €14.94 an hour. On top of that, your Rent Tax Credit is bumped by another €150 up to €1,150 a year."
"Hold the phone!" Whizzley chimed in, adjusting his neon hoodie and taking a deep hit from his vape, releasing a massive cloud of watermelon-flavored steam. "What about the important stuff? The hustle?"
Salty waved the cloud away with a growl. "First off, Whizzley, your clouds are about to cost you more. They’re slapping a new €0.20 per milliliter tax on e-liquids. But for your alleged investments, you're in luck. Capital Gains Tax drops two points from 33% to 31%, and the Exit Tax on funds cuts down to 35%."
"Wait until you hear about July 2027," McFinleyyy interrupted, pulling out a pocket calculator and tapping furiously. "They're introducing a brand-new Tax-Free Investment Account! You can stash up to €12,000 a year in it, tax-free up to a €50,000 gain limit. I’ve already run the numbers—if we pool our copper..."
"Dream on, McFinleyyy," scoffed Govna, leaning back with his hands behind his head. "What about us hardworking folk keeping the wheels turning? What about the income tax entry bands?"
Salty squinted at the paper. "The 40% higher rate income tax threshold jumps by €2,500 to €46,500. The main personal tax credits—Personal, PAYE, and Earned Income—all go up by €125 each, and the 3% USC ceiling expands to €30,300. Overall, middle earners are looking at around €700 to €1,500 back in their pockets every year."
"That’s a grand extra in my pocket," Govna grinned. "And speaking of property, the Rent-a-Room Relief threshold is rising to €16,000, and it now covers detached auxiliary units!"
Winkz tapped the side of his nose, a crooked grin spreading across his face. "So what you're telling me, Govna, is if I fix up that rusted garden shed behind my place and stick a cot in it, I can pull sixteen grand tax-free?"
"Don't get any ideas, Winkz," Sarah warned, setting down a tray of fresh pints. She wiped her hands on her apron and looked at Salty. "What about families, Sarge? Are they giving us a break on the creche fees, or am I working just to pay for childcare?"
"They’re expanding the National Childcare Scheme, Sarah," Salty replied smoothly.
"Fee cuts should save families around €1,000 per child every year, capping average monthly fees around five hundred fifty quid. Plus, the student contribution fee for college drops another €150."
"Good," Sarah sighed, taking a seat. "That’s actual breathing room."
From the corner of the booth, Susan drummed her fingers on her handbag, her eyes sharp. "And what about our seniors and carers, Salty? Don't tell me they forgot the people who built this country."
"Never, Susan," Salty said, nodding respectfully. "There's a €10 per week increase across all core social welfare and the State Pension. The Fuel Allowance goes up by €5 to €43 a week with an expanded income threshold, and there's a €500 lump sum Cost-of-Disability payment. Carer's Allowance income disregards are going up by €150 for single carers and €300 for couples."
"Hmph," Susan softened slightly. "At least that’s something proper."
Suddenly, a loud groan echoed from the end of the bench as Ye Olde Large Lad shifted his massive frame, clutching his chest in mock agony. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a packet of fags. "Salty... tell me they didn't touch the smokes. Please tell me my lungs aren't paying for the state surplus."
Salty let out a rare smirk. "Bad news, Large Lad. Cigarettes are up by a full euro per pack, pushing them past twenty quid. But if your auntie leaves you her estate to pay for your habits, the Category B inheritance tax threshold for nephews and nieces went up by €4,000 to €44,000."
Large Lad sighed, lighting his fag with a shaking hand. "Well... God bless Auntie Mildred, then."
"Right!" Sgt. Salty slapped the table, standing up to his full height. "Electricity VAT stays capped at 9% for three more years, carbon tax is locked at €48.50 a tonne, and the state just dumped another €1 billion into the Future Ireland Fund.
The country’s flush, the brackets have moved, and nobody in this room has an excuse to be broke." He pointed a thick finger at McFinleyyy and Whizzley. "Get up to the bar. With those tax credits coming, the next three rounds are on the misfits!"
