The Salty Gang had arrived at the next marina.
The golden X was real.
The mysterious archway was real.
The treasure map was real.
Unfortunately, nobody had the slightest idea what the inscription underneath the archway meant.
Captain Morgan crouched down and examined it.
“It's definitely not Spanish.”
Dinkz looked at it.
“Definitely not English.”
John Daniels scratched his head.
“Could be ancient Spanish.”
McFinleyyy shook his head.
“No chance.”
Ye Olde Large Lad looked at the writing.
“I THINK IT SAYS RESTAURANT.”
Everyone stared at him.
“It doesn't.”
Large Lad shrugged.
“IT COULD.”
Then Patel arrived.
He walked towards them with a smile.
“You found another clue.”
Salty nodded.
“Unfortunately, none of us can read it.”
Patel took one look.
He immediately became serious.
“Oh.”
“What?” asked Salty.
“This is interesting.”
π Patel's Secret Connection
Patel explained that the writing appeared to be in an Indian language.
Sarah looked impressed.
“You can read it?”
Patel smiled.
“I might be able to.”
McFinleyyy looked at him suspiciously.
“How?”
Patel folded his arms.
“I have connections.”
Salty raised an eyebrow.
“What sort of connections?”
Patel smiled.
“You've heard of the King of Curries?”
There was silence.
Dinkz looked at John Daniels.
John looked at Sarah.
Sarah looked at Susan.
Susan looked at Salty.
Salty finally spoke.
“The King of Curries?”
Patel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Large Lad immediately became interested.
“IS HE A CHEF?”
Patel smiled.
“Something like that.”
Large Lad nodded.
“I LIKE HIM ALREADY.”
π The King of Curries
Patel explained that he had a long-standing connection with the mysterious figure known as the King of Curries.
Apparently, the King was famous for travelling the world, collecting recipes, solving arguments and occasionally helping people translate mysterious messages.
Nobody was entirely sure whether this was true.
But Patel seemed confident.
And, frankly, they were desperate.
Patel crouched beside the inscription.
He carefully studied every letter.
“This is definitely written in an Indian script.”
Captain Morgan leaned closer.
“What does it say?”
Patel frowned.
“Give me a minute.”
Everyone waited.
Large Lad lasted approximately twelve seconds.
“CAN WE GET CURRY?”
“No,” said everyone.
Patel continued examining the clue.
Then suddenly his face changed.
“I've got it.”
Everyone gathered around.
“What does it say?”
Patel translated:
“Where the king's spice meets the sailor's sea, seek the stone that points the way.”
Silence.
Salty looked towards the marina.
“The king's spice…”
Sarah nodded.
“Curry?”
“The sailor's sea…”
Captain Morgan pointed towards the boats.
“The marina.”
McFinleyyy looked at the map.
“And the stone that points the way…”
Dinkz suddenly shouted:
“Compass!”
Everyone turned.
At the far end of the marina was a large stone monument.
And carved into the top was a compass.
π§ The Stone Compass
The gang rushed towards it.
Salty arrived first.
He ran his hand over the stone.
There was another symbol.
A tiny crown.
Patel smiled.
“The King of Curries.”
Salty stared at him.
“You're telling me this treasure hunt is connected to a curry king?”
Patel shrugged.
“Apparently.”
Vicky laughed.
“This is the strangest holiday I've ever been on.”
Salty smiled.
“Welcome to the Misfits.”
Sarah pointed at the bottom of the monument.
“There are more words.”
Everyone gathered around.
Patel translated them.
“When the sun sets, the final path begins.”
Captain Morgan looked towards the horizon.
The sun was already beginning to drop.
“We don't have much time.”
McFinleyyy grabbed the map.
“What's the next destination?”
Patel pointed towards a small island visible beyond the marina.
“There.”
Everyone stared.
Salty smiled.
“The treasure is on that island.”
Large Lad looked worried.
“IS THERE FOOD?”
Salty sighed.
“Large Lad…”
“What?”
“Focus.”
“I AM FOCUSED.”
“You're focused on food.”
“FOOD IS IMPORTANT.”
Nobody could argue with that.
π The Final Clue
The team stood together beside the stone compass.
The sun was beginning to set.
The sea turned golden.
The marina became quieter.
And for the first time, the treasure actually seemed within reach.
Salty looked at Patel.
“You know…”
Patel smiled.
“This partnership is working.”
Salty nodded.
“Agreed.”
Vicky stood beside them.
“So what's the plan?”
Captain Morgan pointed towards the island.
“We sail there.”
Dinkz smiled.
“Another boat trip.”
Susan laughed.
“Hopefully fewer mysteries this time.”
McFinleyyy shook his head.
“No chance.”
John Daniels looked at the map.
“There is one problem.”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
He pointed at the bottom corner.
There was a final symbol.
A skull.
☠️
Large Lad looked at it.
“IS THAT BAD?”
Salty stared at the symbol.
“Probably.”
Large Lad nodded.
“RIGHT.”
He picked up his backpack.
“WE SHOULD BRING THE CHIPS.”
McFinleyyy looked at him.
“You've got a point.”
And with the sun setting behind them, the Salty Gang prepared for the final leg of their treasure hunt.
An island.
A mysterious skull.
A stone compass.
A curry king.
And somewhere in the distance…
the treasure.
