There are television characters who become popular, and then there are characters who become icons. Buffy Summers belongs firmly in the second category.

When Buffy the Vampire Slayer arrived on television, nobody could have known just how big the show would become. What started as a slightly unusual idea about a teenage girl fighting vampires, demons and assorted supernatural nasties turned into one of the most loved cult television shows of its generation.

And at the centre of it all was SMG — Sarah Michelle Gellar — as Buffy Summers.

She faced loss, heartbreak, fear, loneliness and impossible decisions. She sometimes made mistakes, sometimes got things spectacularly wrong, and sometimes struggled under the weight of being the Slayer.

Yet she kept going.

That is probably one of the biggest reasons the character remains so popular.
