way.

Back in 2022, New Jersey authorities confirmed that two women incarcerated at the state's women's prison became pregnant following sexual relationships with a transgender inmate.

The prison was Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women.

The inmate was subsequently identified in reporting as Demi Minor, a transgender woman.

And before anyone starts shouting at the computer, there's an important factual detail:

New Jersey's Department of Corrections said the relationships were consensual.

Edna Mahan was the state's only women's prison.

Then came the extraordinary announcement that two inmates had become pregnant following sexual relationships with another incarcerated person.

And suddenly the internet had another story to argue about.

The case generated considerable controversy over prison housing policies, particularly among correctional officers and others who opposed the arrangements.

Minor was later transferred out of Edna Mahan to a different correctional facility. Contemporary reporting said Minor was housed in a vulnerable housing unit there.

If somebody pitched this as the opening scene of a satirical television programme, the producer would probably say:

And that's precisely why stories like this belong in a feature called:
