ππ The 2026 National Ploughing Championship
“Watch Me Plough This Field!”
The morning of the 2026 National Ploughing Championship began like any other morning involving Stg. Salty: with absolutely nobody knowing what the hell he was planning.
McFinleyyy was the first to receive the message.
SALTY: Get yourself ready.
McFINLEYYY: For what?
There was a long pause.
SALTY: Ploughing.
McFinleyyy stared at the phone.
McFINLEYYY: Do you even own a tractor?
The reply came immediately.
SALTY: No.
Another pause.
SALTY: I have a Leopard 2.
McFinleyyy nearly dropped his coffee.
By nine o'clock, the entire misfit crew had assembled.
There was Winky, looking suspiciously innocent. Quags had arrived with a backpack containing enough sandwiches to feed a small army. Ye Olde Large Lad was already discussing agricultural machinery despite having apparently never driven anything larger than a shopping trolley.
Whizzair turned up wearing sunglasses, claiming he'd "flown in."
Nobody had the courage to ask how.
Sarah and Susan arrived together, looking considerably more sensible than the rest of the gang. The Alicia Silverstone lookalike was with them, looking effortlessly glamorous and completely bewildered by the gathering.
Then came Govna.
And Senior Miguel.
And finally, Bingo Girl, who had decided that the Ploughing Championship was the perfect place to continue her philosophy that B was for Beautiful, I was for Incredible, N was for Naughty, G was for Gorgeous, and O was for Oh-my-God-look-at-that-tractor.
"That's not how bingo works," Susan told her.
"It is today," Bingo Girl replied.
Then came the sound.
A deep mechanical growl rolled across the countryside.
Everyone turned.
Over the horizon appeared Stg. Salty.
Not on a tractor.
Not on a quad.
Not even on a vintage Massey Ferguson.
No.
The man was arriving in a Leopard 2 tank.
McFinleyyy put both hands on his head.
"Salty!"
The tank rolled to a dramatic halt beside the entrance.
Salty climbed out wearing a pair of overalls, sunglasses and the expression of a man who had just invented agriculture.
He looked at the assembled gang.
"Morning, misfits."
"Salty," said Sarah slowly, "why have you brought a tank to the Ploughing Championship?"
Salty grinned.
"Because I'm here to make history."
Ye Olde Large Lad looked at the tank.
"Is that actually road legal?"
Salty shrugged.
"Define legal."
Susan sighed.
"Oh dear."
The group wandered into the championship grounds, surrounded by tractors, machinery, livestock, food stalls and thousands of enthusiastic visitors.
Everywhere they looked there were enormous agricultural machines.
Some tractors had wheels taller than Quags.
Some had engines powerful enough to move mountains.
Some had price tags that made McFinleyyy physically dizzy.
But Salty wasn't impressed.
He stood proudly beside the Leopard 2.
"All lovely machinery," he announced, "but none of it has my style."
"Your style?" said Winky.
"Military agricultural engineering."
Govna nodded thoughtfully.
"That's a very fancy way of saying you're about to do something stupid."
"Exactly."
They eventually reached one of the demonstration fields.
A crowd had gathered around the ploughing displays.
Salty looked across the freshly prepared field.
His eyes narrowed.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
McFinleyyy knew that smile.
"Oh no."
Salty pointed toward the field.
"Watch me."
Sarah folded her arms.
"Salty..."
He raised one finger dramatically.
"Watch me plough this field with my Leopard 2 tank."
Silence.
Then Quags whispered:
"He's actually going to do it."
The Alicia lookalike laughed.
"Well... that's certainly one way to make an entrance."
Bingo Girl grinned.
"B is for brave."
Susan shook her head.
"Or bonkers."
Salty climbed back into the tank.
The engine roared.
The entire crowd turned.
One of the official-looking men nearby stared at the tank, then at Salty, then back at the tank.
"That's not a tractor."
Salty leaned out of the hatch.
"It's a tractor with attitude."
"It doesn't have a plough."
Salty paused.
"Minor technicality."
McFinleyyy suddenly noticed something attached to the rear of the tank.
"Salty... where did you get that?"
Salty smiled.
"I borrowed it."
"From whom?"
"That's not important."
The tank began moving.
Very slowly.
The crowd erupted in laughter and cheers as Salty approached the field.
Sarah started recording on her phone.
Susan joined her.
Winky shouted, "GO ON SALTY!"
Quags was already eating a sandwich.
Ye Olde Large Lad began offering completely unnecessary commentary.
"Now, if you look at the turning radius—"
"Nobody asked!" shouted Govna.
The Leopard 2 entered the field.
For three glorious seconds, everything appeared to be going perfectly.
Then Salty turned.
The tank swung around.
A huge cloud of dust erupted behind it.
Quags disappeared completely.
"QUAGS!" shouted McFinleyyy.
"I'm alright!" came the muffled voice.
The tank continued forward.
Salty was laughing like a lunatic.
"LOOK AT THAT!"
"YOU'RE NOT PLOUGHING!" shouted McFinleyyy.
"I'm redefining ploughing!"
The crowd loved it.
Even the officials seemed to have accepted that resistance was pointless.
Salty drove another line through the field, leaving an impressively straight track behind him.
He stopped.
Silence.
Then applause.
Salty stood up through the hatch and raised both arms.
"WHO SAID A TANK COULDN'T PLOUGH?"
Bingo Girl shouted:
"Nobody!"
Salty pointed at her.
"Exactly!"
Sarah laughed.
"You've destroyed half the field."
Salty corrected her.
"Improved."
Susan walked over and looked at the enormous tracks.
"You know, Salty, proper farmers spend years learning how to do this."
Salty nodded respectfully.
"Exactly."
"So why did you think you'd be able to do it?"
Salty smiled.
"Confidence."
McFinleyyy shook his head.
"Delusion."
"Same thing."
The afternoon continued with the gang sampling everything the championship had to offer.
There were burgers.
There were chips.
There were enormous agricultural machines.
There were competitions.
There was even a tractor that Quags became emotionally attached to.
But the highlight remained Salty's tank.
As evening approached, the group stood together watching the sunset over the fields.
The Alicia lookalike smiled.
"You know, Salty, for a man who arrived in a tank, you've actually made the day rather memorable."
Salty adjusted his sunglasses.
"I do my best."
McFinleyyy laughed.
"What's the plan now?"
Salty looked toward the horizon.
Everyone waited.
Finally, he grinned.
"Tomorrow..."
He pointed dramatically at the tank.
"...we teach it to milk a cow."
Everyone shouted at once:
"NO!"
Salty laughed.
And somewhere in the distance, a tractor engine started.
The 2026 National Ploughing Championship had officially survived the arrival of Stg. Salty and his misfits.
Just barely.
